Hungarian Pole Stickers

This very common northeastern sticker has the standard layout with the word "Vigyázz" in bold on the top, lightning sign and digits with dots on the bottom. What makes it unique is the large number of digits (usually 5, but 4 or 3 may also appear) and a small phone number written above the numbers, which appears as two additional lines of text to the three on top.

This sticker, found in the western half, has the standard layout with the word "Vigyázz" in bold on the top, lightning sign and digits with dots on the bottom. It will have no more than a 3-digit number, optionally a grounding sign, and no phone number unlike in the northeast. Sometimes there will be more than 3 characters, but that's because multiple small numbers are written with the / symbol in between.

A variant of the western Vigyázz sticker with colourful plates is unique to the northwest. Sometimes the pole will have a repeated version of the sticker with the same number printed onto it, and the colours may also be repeated as stripes on the pole.
Note that yellow (same as the colour of the sticker) or light yellow (which may appear white) plates don't count as colourful and may be found in the southwest too!

A small sticker featuring a red exclamation point is almost unique to the southwest.

Yellow sticker with grey digits and a QR code on the right is a feature of the southeast.

Small yellow plate with no more than 3 digits and sometimes also a grounding sign is specific to the western half of the country. The plate is basically a reduced version of the western 3-digit Vigyázz sticker and found in the same area.

Yellow plate with 5 (and rarely 4) digits, with black dots above and below them, is found in the northeast. The plate is basically a reduced version of the 5-digit Vigyázz sticker, and often the two stickers are found next to one another on the same pole.

Small yellow plate with the grounding sign (and nothing else), usually placed at the very bottom of a pole, is specific to the northeast.

This recognizable type of white plastic pole plate is rather long ang horizontal, with each digit being printed on a special elevated section with darker outline around it.

In addition to pole stickers, the southeastern region has this iconic poletop with slanted bars, resembling the one you may find in India or South Australia.

The Szolnok sticker consists of two wide yellow rectangles spaced far apart. As opposed to the similar looking sticker in Sopron, this one takes up the whole width of the pole.

Double yellow sticker with the bottom part significantly longer. The bottom usually has "staircase"-shaped digits, and the top has a lightning and three lines of text. Other similar variations of this sticker also exist.

Simple white plate with 2-4 digits.

The Szabolcs sticker is one of the most recognizable stickers in Hungary. The tall yellow sticker usually featurs two lines of 4 digits and some additional stuff on the bottom. The digits commonly have the 04xx 00xx format. This sticker is unique to Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county and a small region in northern Hajdú-Bihar.
There are a number of variations of this sticker that all look rather similar and are found in the same county.

While the standard Szabolcs sticker with two 4-digit lines usually has 04xx 00xx number format, the ones in northern Hajdú-Bihar often deviate from it and have other numbers instead.

Two small grey stickers spaced far apart are unique to the northeast.

Simple yellow stickers are probably the most frequent type in the country. They are a common sight in the western half and three regions in the east, but never found in the northeast or the southeast.

A yellow sticker with 3 or more digits is most commonly found in the eastern half of Tolna county. It is also somewhat frequent in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Hajdú-Bihar. Areas around eastern Tolna also rarely have this sticker, so the full distribution includes some other counties.

Stickers with this specific shade of yellow are exclusive to this region mostly located in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok. Sometimes you'll see a regular yellow sticker and an ochre right next to it, making it obvious. Other times, it might be a little tricky to differentiate the shades.

This unusually tall yellow sticker is found in Zala and Somogy. It commonly features random faded text than can be of different colours.
Make sure not to confuse it with the Hajdú-Bihar or Szabolcs stickers, which have much more standardized digit layouts and whose text is much clearer.

The area near the eastern tip of Lake Balaton has this rather big yellow sticker with a red stripe close to the bottom. The stripe may appear faded and more orange or grey than red, so it's the shape that matters, not the colour.

Yellow stickers with red digits on them are mostly found in Baranya, followed by Komárom-Esztergom and northern Tolna and very rarely other regions.
The font of the digits in these regions varies slightly, with Tolna havving the biggest digits, Komárom the smallest and Baranya with its own calligraphic look to the digits.

Paper sticker with this recognizable shape drawn printed onto it is found in the eastern parts of the country. It comes in two main colour variants - blue and maroon.

Black-and-white paper advertisement sticker is mostly found around Lake Balaton in coastal settlements. The design may vary, usually featuring a lot of text and a phone number. Rarely, they can also be found in neraby cities, such as Kaposvár and Veszprém.
You might confuse it with a similar sticker which is specific to Zala, but that one has more faint text and also a standard design with the word "HIRDETÉS" on top and two phone numbers at the bottom.

Zala has a unique paper sticker that features the word "Hirdetés" at the top and two phone numbers at the bottom.
The Balaton paper sticker might look similar, but this one always has the same design.

Simple white plate with 5 digits is found in the western half of the country, as well as the three "standalone regions" in the east. These plates are usually found on transformer boxes in addition to electricity poles.

The design may slightly vary and may sometimes be used to narrow the region down even further, but this is beyond the scope of this introductory quiz.

When the first digit on a 5-digit white plate is either 1, 2 or 4, it can only be found in the west and not in the three eastern counties.

Plates with Roman numerals on them on transformer boxes are specific to Győr-Moson-Sopron. They are usually placed beside a white plate with 5 digits.

The small sticker with "TN" written on it, usually found on transformer boxes, is found in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg and Hajdú-Bihar.

These stickers are clustered in a small area west of the Danube, around Dunaújváros and Dunaföldvár. The defining feature is the large hand-written digits.

Tolna county has this quite rare sticker with a black text box containing 3 lines of text and a lightning sign, and a number above or below the box. The number will not be hand-written unlike on the Danube sticker. Some variants of the Hajdú-Bihar sticker may also appear similar, but they won't have the black border around the text.

The area around Székesfehérvár has a lot of such grey stickers with many digits written in a two-layer layout.

Blue or green coloured pole markings with digits are predominantly found in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county east of Miskolc.

This very small white/grey plate with a short number is unique to a region in southern Zala.
It might be hard to spot, sometimes only the number might be intelligible as the plate's colour blends with the pole, the small size is what makes it unique.

Area east of Sopron has this unique sticker consisting of two small white rectangles. As opposed to the similar looking Szolnok sticker, this one is smaller and thus doesn't take up the whole width of the pole.

This grey sticker has two layers of digits and a black line separating them. It's found in a small area which includes the cities of Jászberény and Hatvan.

Some eastern cities, such as Nyíregyháza and Debrecen, have these red stickers with 1-2 digits. The sticker's shape is slightly trapezoidal as opposed to a straight rectangle, and they are painted onto hexagonal lampposts and not holey electricity poles.

Poles in Budapest often have a white vertical sticker with 2-3 digits. Usually, a yellow rectangle with a lightning sign is also placed above it.

Many streets in Debrecen have lampposts with grey stickers that have red digits on them. The digits can be placed vertically or horizontally. Sometimes, when the pole itself is grey, there will only be the digits without the background.

Miskolc has vertical stickers with 4 or more digits that may be yellow or white. Yellow stickers would be found in the western neighbourhoods, while white ones are in the downtown and eastern parts of the city. They won't have the lightning sign above, unlike in Budapest.

Szeged has green poles with white digits printed vertically. Most of the time, there will be a line below the topmost digit. Green poles in general are very common in Szeged, but not totally unique to the city without the digits.

Many poles and lampposts in Nyíregyháza have a yellow "K" symbol on them.

An iconic pole plate in Mosonmagyaróvár is long, yellow and has 7 digits starting with 540. Even if the digits aren't intelligible, the unusual length will tell this plate apart.

Sopron sticker is red with a white border and two lines of white text. A green dot is usually also seen next to it on the same pole.

Kaposvár has a unique sticker having three lines of text, which comes in two variants: a white plate with red text, or bright green text printed directly onto the pole.

This sticker is specific to Gödöllő. It may be yellow or white with black digits and attaches to the pole by clamps. The font of the digits distinguishes the Gödöllő sticker from any other one in the country.
